I love it too, but it's a Hendrix song, with lyrics, which Stevie Ray left out, and the guitar solo is Jimi's...
Susan -- I'm a huge Jimi fan, and of course he deserves credit for creating it. But Stevie plays it better. There was no way he could sing it while playing. Stevie always said that he had incredible difficulty singing and playing simultaneously. Next time you fire up a Stevie tune, listen how he sings a line, plays a riff, sings a line, breaks into a solo.
Lots of other people have covered it, most famously Clapton in 1970 and Sting in the late 80's (with Gil Evans) from "Nothing Like the Sun." Interestingly, some of the greatest living guitarists, including Clapton and Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits), appeared on that album too.
I love Clapton, but hated the Derek version of "Little Wing," although it was actually the first I'd ever heard of it. When I then heard Jimi and Stevie, I flipped my proverbial wig.
